Background Story:
cw: child neglect, death, terrorism (very mild mentions but better to be safe!).
I.
Born in Driftveil City, Nate lived there with his parents up until their divorce. In a lucky strike disguised as misfortune, he moved in with his grandmother, a retired actress living in Aspertia City. No longer wishing to be associated with each other, Nate’s parents decided to go separate ways, offering the child’s custody to Nate’s grandmother. She happily accepted.
To celebrate Nate’s adoption and perhaps soothe the child’s feeling of abandonment, the old actress gifted the young boy a pokéball. The boy caught his very first pokémon then, a spunky Rufflet he dubbed ‘Captain’. Beneath the promise that pokémon would never leave the boy’s side, Nate's sheltered personality slowly changed for the better.
II.
Having been on stage in Nimbasa’s most famous theatres several decades ago, Nate’s grandmother held in high regard the world of entertainment. It was the retired actress who nurtured the boy’s passion for scenic arts. And it was also she who mentored the boy into Pokémon battling.
It was a challenge changing the boy’s opinion of Pokémon. Neither of his parents held love for them, so it didn’t come as a surprise Nate had no talent for it whatsoever. Still, the boy opened up to the mysterious yet wonderful creatures, and his biggest flaw became his most redeeming virtue: not knowing when to quit.
Nate’s thirst for knowledge was insatiable. He’d spend day and night watching films, musicals and all other sources to feed his thirst for acting. His grandmother’s recordings of her shows became his biggest inspirations. She belonged to one of Unova’s most successful companies, mixing acting with Pokémon battling. But that Nate opened his heart to a dream and his Pokémon in the safety of his home, didn’t mean he was ready for the outside world.
III.
At school he was just as withdrawn and quiet as ever, burying himself in his interests rather than socialising with other kids. Nate’s stubbornness took the best of him and he hardly had any friends when he received his license to become a trainer.
Fortune dealt its cards once again, and before Nate could set out on his trainer’s journey, his grandmother fell to the inevitable sickness of old age. She passed away quickly, leaving a birthday gift behind. A mysterious egg and a recommendation letter. Still, Nate didn’t feel ready for either, and instead of beginning his Pokémon journey as promised, he left Aspertia to devote himself to an artistic career.
IV.
Nate joined Castelia’s Arts Institute, fully dedicating himself to his passion. But with what little money a scholarship left (and refusing any money his parents sent), the boy could barely sustain himself and his pokémon. Thus for years, Nate juggled between various part-time jobs, his fear of approaching people completely vanishing within the noise of the big city.

[ Team Plasma’s First Strike. Pokémon Liberation Project. Desperate times demand desperate measures and the Unova’s Interpol branch gathered new intelligence members. ]
During one of his many part-time job interviews, Nate was mistaken for a new apprentice at the secret recruiting Interpol Agency. The unsuspecting boy passed every test with flying colours and was then accepted as a new agent in training.
Eventually, Nate’s current boss (and mentor) realised too late Nate wasn’t the recommended talented trainer they were expecting. Still, because the boy proved to be highly efficient, they offered him the position regardless. After seeing the amount of his future paychecks, Nate accepted.

At the age of fifteen, Nate finally obtained his first movie role at PokéStar Studios. It may have been a simple and pretty forgettable role, a mere supporting character in a low-budget movie, but it opened the doors to the world of entertainment. Still, gaining prestige in the world of acting meant he had to become a more devoted trainer. With this goal in mind, Nate allowed himself to finally take on the League Challenge a year later.
While dutifully carrying out his badge-collecting crusade, he inevitably crossed paths with Team Plasma. They were an organisation that had threatened his home region in the past, stealing Pokémon under the guise of Pokémon Liberation. Luckily, Nate’s pokémon partners were more than just party members, but Nate’s real family. The strength of his bond with them allowed the young trainer to take a stand against the terrorist group.
But when Nate managed to gather all the gym badges needed to challenge the Elite Four, he was forced to pause his journey. The agency needed help in recovering various stolen and rampaging Pokémon that endangered the region. Behind the stage, the boy unknowingly aided the heroes of Unova to work a miracle and save the world from disaster.
Trouble paid well, nonetheless. His involvement in protecting the nation —even if done from the sidelines, earned him and his pokémon a stronger bond.
VI.
With peace returning to Unova, there's a bunch of time skip shenanigans... which I am a little too lazy to describe. For now.
— Epilogue before a New Beginning —
Having participated in the Pokémon World Tournament for several years now, Nate’s name as both a trainer and an actor has become the daily talk around the region. Described as a dedicated and undyingly passionate young man, Nate’s promising career is closely followed by the media and admired by many.
However, balancing both his acting career and his reputation as a trainer becomes harder with each passing year. He isn’t willing to surrender what he’s cultivated to this day so easily, however. Not when his life represents what hard work can accomplish over talent.
